Doe erected their first PREO SPORT Canopy at Chineham Community Games Area, Basingstoke in September and it was officially ‘opened’ on Sunday 25 October 2009 by the Mayor during a day of sporting activity and celebrations.
The Chineham Community Games Area is a ‘free access’ park for local children and adults designed to provide the local community with a facility which encourages participation in a range of sport and recreation activities in an attractive environment.
The floodlit PREO SPORT covered ball court facility installed by Doe will cater for a range of sports including football, basketball and netball. The local children were so keen to start using the facility that they were queuing to play on it every evening as Doe finished work for the day and often found on the site very early in the morning before the next day’s work started!
This is the first PREO Canopy to be installed in the UK since Doe signed their exclusive agreement with SMC2, the French designers and manufacturers of this very attractive and innovative sports structure. SMC2 are at the forefront of fabric structures and buildings in Europe and, from the number of enquiries now in the pipeline, it looks as though these products may soon be as popular here as they are on the continent.
The Chineham development also includes landscaped open areas for general play and kick about as well as meeting and seating areas, dynamic play equipment, an aerial cableway, iPlay interactive play equipment and a BMX track.
Commenting on the new facilities during the official opening day, the Mayor said “I am very proud and impressed by what had been achieved in such a remarkably short time since Planning Approval was granted in February this year and, judging by the numbers of young people already using the facilities, it is already a very successful development and one which looks like being of great benefit to the community”.
